Dozens of families have vacated the botanical gardens in Entebbe Municipality after the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) issued them eviction notices two weeks ago. This followed the expiry of a 14-day eviction notice issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
UWA officials say the decision to evict tenants from the staff quarters of Entebbe Botanical Gardens is aimed at transforming the area into one of the most renowned tourist destinations in the country.
According to UWA, the relocation process has been largely successful with 80% of the affected families offered positions as casual workers within the EBG.
In addition to employment opportunities, some families have received complimentary transport back to their home districts, along with their livestock.
Established in 1898, the botanical gardens in entebbe are vital for uganda’s natural heritge providing a habitat for diverse plant and animal species.
The ongoing restoration aims to revitalise the gardens, as well as promote eco tourism, conservation education as well as research
